The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is committed to delivering transportation improvements that balance mobility, safety, environmental considerations, community needs, and cost.

NJDOT invites you to participate in a Public Information Center (PIC) for the Route 440 Pavement Reconstruction Project (Route 95 to Kreil Street). This virtual meeting provides an opportunity for residents, businesses, and stakeholders to learn about the project and share feedback.

Purpose and Need

  • Improve existing substandard pavement conditions throughout this roadway section from milepost 0.05 to 4.0.

  • Address safety and operational concerns within the project limits based on current data.

  • The project will also enhance safety and improve traffic operations while maintaining traffic flow during construction.

  • Key Project Features and Proposed Work

    The project includes:

    • Pavement reconstruction and ramp resurfacing
    • Weaving, southbound ramp, and auxiliary lane widening
    • Guide rail, retaining wall, drainage, and stormwater work
    • New signal at Route 440/Woodbridge Avenue
    • Sign, striping, lighting, and ITS upgrades
    • Pier protection retrofits and ADA curb ramp upgrades
  • Right-of-Way and Environmental

    Right-of-Way:

    • The project will require temporary and permanent easements, as well as one temporary access easement to support construction and future maintenance.

    Environmental Impacts:

    • Environmental impacts are expected to be minimal
  • Construction Approach

    • Construction will be completed in stages across two phases to minimize traffic disruptions
    • All Route 440 NB and SB travel lanes will remain open during construction
    • Ramp resurfacing will occur during nighttime and weekend closures, with temporary detours as needed
